Drought Response Modeling in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex

Jeremy Rice, Freese and Nichols, Inc.

Abstract: In 2011 the State of Texas experienced unprecedented drought conditions, which most of the state under extreme or exceptional drought conditions. Long-term projections indicate that the drought could continue through 2012. Several Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex water providers are concerned as low lake levels impact their ability to take water. At the same time, the discovery of zebra mussels in Lake Texoma has further reduced supplies available to the North Texas Municipal Water District, a major Metroplex water provider, by approximately 25%. To assist these providers, FNI has employed RiverWare to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing a combination of conservation, facility improvements, and new supplies if the drought persists over the next few years.
