Groundwater Modeling Enhancments; Calibration Tools and Mass Balance Checking

Abstract:
Groundwater Enhancements
The Groundwater Storage object simulates flow between adjacent groundwater objects using an explicit equation based on head difference and conductance. Previously, the user had to specify the conductance on each groundwater object for each direction of flow. A recent enhancement to the groundwater object supports computation of the conductances from the hydraulic conductivity and the aquifer geometry. Future enhancements to the Groundwater Storage object will include the ability to model salinity on the groundwater object using a two layer approach.

Calibration Tools
A number of tools to support calibration of the model have been added to RiverWare. These include an Object Grid tab on the System Control Table (SCT) to show a matrix of objects and selected slots. In addition, the SCT has been enhanced to show a list of series slots to allow for easy re-ordering and creation of similar groups of slots. Using a new utility on the SCT, it is also much easier to specify the desired method for time aggregation. An enhancement for adjusting a slot by a fixed value or a percentage was added to both the SCT and all slot dialogs. Also, the SCT's interpolate function can now be applied to multiple slots. Finally, work is underway on a Mass Balance Summary tool to display the sum of slots and slot groups at each timestep.
