ABSTRACT
BPA’s power services utilizes modeling for planning operations and deriving marketing strategy to manage a resource stack of 31 federal hydropower projects and one non-federal nuclear plant. Modeling this large and diverse resource stack requires effective system characterization, flexibility to address multiple scenarios, and the ability to revise model logic to keep the models current. Over the last several years BPA has developed the HERMES project which integrates a RiverWare Optimizer and a Rulebased Simulator into the FEWS architecture. The application is shared between BPA’s short-term planning and real-time hydro scheduling groups and is used to evaluate different model scenarios over different forecast periods. This talk will discuss the challenges of modeling the multi-reservoir system, the types of model runs performed, and the coordination and hand-off of model data between the user groups.
