Challenges Regarding Hourly Routing for Operations Models

ABSTRACT
Reclamation's Yuma Area Office has an hourly RiverWare model of the Colorado River between Parker Dam and Imperial Dam which is used for daily operations. One of the objectives of the model is to accurately route the hourly releases from Parker Dam to Imperial Dam in order to forecast potential excesses or shortages with respect to the water user orders (and scheduling orders from Parker Dam to meet orders at Imperial Dam). Accurate hourly routing can be challenging due routing method inaccuracies, physical processes that are difficult to model, and measurement error in stream flow gauging. This presentation explores each of these items and explains how each were addressed in the hourly RiverWare model.
