First Steps Towards a Multi-objective Optimization of Meeting Water Supply Demands and Hydropower Generation for Sam Rayburn Reservoir

Noah Friesen, Jonathan Quebbeman, Abby Watson and Jay Day—RTI International; Allen Avance—U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District

ABSTRACT
RTI International is working with USACE-SWD and SWF Water Management to update the RiverWare model for the Neches River to reflect recent changes in operations at Sam Rayburn Reservoir and utilize the updated model in a simulation-optimization approach to find the tradeoffs between two objectives: (1) maximizing hydropower generation and (2) minimizing risk of not meeting downstream water supply demands. Ultimately, this project will provide an optimized guide curve for Sam Rayburn Reservoir. This presentation will provide a brief background on the RiverWare model, set forth the framework for conducting the optimization, discuss the multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA) of choice for the optimization, and provide an opportunity for RTI International to discuss the work with the RiverWare community.
