Northern Water Daily Planning Model Overview |
Luke Shawcross, Andy Pineda, & Katie Melander |
Northern Water is a public agency created in 1937 to contract with the federal government to build the Colorado-Big Thompson Project. The C-BT project provides supplemental water to more than 640,000 acres of irrigated farm and ranch land and about 860,000 people in Northeastern Colorado. Northern Water and the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation jointly operate and maintain the C-BT project, which collects water on the West Slope and delivers it through a 13-mile tunnel beneath Rocky Mountain National Park to portions of eight Northeastern Colorado counties.
Northern Water’s Daily Planning Model was created to replace an aging monthly planning model. The model is used to assist with the seasonal planning and operation of the C-BT project. The model has been in use for several years and continues to be expanded. |
Features of the model include: |
• |
Analyzing project operations with forecasted inflows and demands; |
• |
Intelligent operation of project facilities in order to meet discrete goals including delivering project water to direct demands, filling terminal storage reservoirs for later delivery, and generating power using non-project water; |
• |
Automatic routing of water through the system based on planned operations and outages; and |
• |
Multiple run analysis using streamflow forecast ensembles to help plan for and monitor spill situations. |
