Central Utah Water Conservancy District (CUWCD) is responsible for operating the Central Utah Project (CUP), which conveys water through a network of facilities to over 1.5 million people in Utah. This multi-reservoir system includes hundreds of miles of conveyance infrastructure that routes water from the Colorado and Great Basins into collection facilities serving customers across the region. Tracking and accounting for that water is essential to comply with the management plans and water rights governing the basins in which the CUP infrastructure operates. This creates a unique set of challenges when managing multiple categories of water across a large, complex system while interfacing with customers, managers, and state regulators.
Collecting, housing, analyzing, and reporting data within this complex water network requires an advanced data flow system - one that depends on input from reservoir operators and decision makers to function efficiently and effectively. RiverWare serves as the computational and accounting hub at the center of this system. This presentation describes how that system was developed and how RiverWare's ability to ingest, compile, compute, and report data enables CUWCD staff to operate more effectively in fulfilling their mission.
